They measured love in numbers
crying Grow! Economy
And ticker-taped their leaders
in wreaths of profit-seeking glee
where hopeless homeless zombies wandered
pacing past commercials bleating
laughing, lost in our new sickness
a plain parade of soft depravity
They doled out love in numbers
tacking spreadsheets to their gifts
they said we’ve done the studies
and now we’ve got it roundly fixed!
where children stared at vapid screens
of blasting queens in big-wide smiles
leering fast-food drugs appeared
to then engender blank passivity
Where went our sane morality?
the word is now a sin
we’ve trod from God and made our own
from science, gears, and steel
and men
Poor Jesus how his face is used
our god is numbers
sing the blues
